Glancing through some online coupons, door crashers deals, and a flood of advertising for Black Friday, I carelessly asked my 13-year-old, “Mehar do we need to buy anything on Black Friday”? She happens to be my advisor and “grandma in disguise after all.
Faster than the speed of light came a response, “Peanut butter, sea salt, methi (fresh fenugreek), dish detergent, a boot tray, and WD-40”.
I quickly jotted down all these items to an existing list on my phone as she wisely added, “You may also need to change the battery of remote starter. The car didn’t start last Friday and yesterday when we attempted the first couple of times, remember”? She advised some more and got busy watching DIYs instantly after.
As I stood by the simmering tea, her nonchalant mindfulness left me thinking to myself for a while if I was doing something wrong as a parent. ” Am I raising a child or an adult”? A little bit of self-doubt clouded my otherwise reasonable and robust frame of mind. With the first sip of calming tea, the proud mother raised her head, “The best example any parent can set is to be steadfast and uncompromising in following their purpose. Sharing their vision, their bliss, maintaining their financial discipline even if this means some temporary difficulties for the family. You are neither raising a child nor an adult, Anoop. You are raising a reasonably responsible human being. Be proud of yourself”!
