Sadly but surely, we have integrated and unconsciously invested our best wisdom and best self to a terrible extent to get stirred up, thrown off, and tinged by news media. We are devastatingly yet by default attracted towards agencies and sources that toy with our already vulnerable emotions. Fear sells! Death, cunning, insanity are a few more names of breaking news these days. Breaking news is bad news only.
We all grew up differently; that doesn’t mean that I don’t care what is happening around me; neither does it mean that I don’t mind the prevalent terror culture. I am part of this world, and I get sucked in just as much as anyone else around me. Lust for power has crippled the view and judgment, let alone the actions of most world leaders of today. I, an ordinary person, keep my opinion to myself. I no longer entrust my view of the world to the hurried, caffeinated, sleep-deprived, and deadline-driven journalists, politicians, wise men/ women, professionals or any key persons. Since these people are repeatedly asked and expected by their agencies or anyone and everyone they represent, report to or shed light on what attracts eyeballs and stirs up emotions instead of elevating, inspiring, and creating a connection. Bless their hearts. Maybe a plea for peace is too much to be granted in today’s world. Possibly my vision of the world doesn’t fit into their agendas to meet targets of building nations that run on ruins of mass human destruction. Their unique tastebuds for the arms and ammunition industry and their fetish to suck the last breath out of innocent people worldwide is appalling.
Horror unfolds itself every day in Myanmar when innocent Rohingyans run for their lives across the borders and beyond, where toddlers are being fed alive to raging fires in front of helpless mothers. Sixty people were dead and hundreds injured at a country music festival in Las Vegas last Sunday. Bridges collapse because of substandard materials used due to the naturally corrupt officers and poor administration. Fatal tragedies mostly top traffic news. Droughts are becoming longer and more extreme around the world as a result of global warming. A tanker truck exploded near Ahmedpur East in Pakistan’s Bahawalpur district, killing 219 people and injuring at least 34 others. Grave news keeps pouring in. Some countries endanger the region and possibly the world; others have conducted unprovoked, illegal, aggressive attacks, funded and provoked illegal coup.
News doesn’t have to be bad news all the time, but so it is! I get annoyed when I see my daughter taking unnecessary breaks during homework to keep up with her Snapchat feed. It worries me just as much as it bothers any other parent to see children lost in the battlefields of now trending gadgets and social media. Deep down in some corner of my heart, I am relieved that, at least temporarily, these children are oblivious to the alarmingly scary environment that they live in these days. We live in a strange world that feeds its insatiable desire to destroy with nothing but more potential for distraction. We are devoid of unexamined opinions. Our sense of remorse refuses to witness dense confusion, suffering, and others’ joy. Are we immune to the pains of others just because it’s an everyday thing now? Sadly, this new incorporation of shamelessness and redesigned fabric of indifference is a part of our universal identity, and flawed character today, humanity if any left at all, is in crisis! We must try what we can to activate love, harmony, and understanding in our internal, local, and the innermost universe. What about the rest? We have narrowed down our focus and sphere of intention to become powerful storytellers and alchemists of perception only. Sometimes, we failingly try to play with our cognitive filters: Everything is real. Everything is a dream. Everything is chaos, yet everything is in its place, even when it doesn’t appear to be that way at all. We try and try, but we can’t keep up with the constant upheaval.
I am at a visible loss of words for the past several weeks now. There seems to be no beginning and no end. I hope, however, whatever follows – large or subtle actions – inevitably have a cooling effect on the hearts and minds of us all. Otherwise, we all lose!
I hope there is a sense of a widespread awakening. We manage to rise above the common preoccupations and sufferings of humanity end sooner than soon so that we start to operate by an entirely different set of rules. Immorality and amorality are subjective to society and cultures; they are also subjective to personal preferences. Living in the community makes us create norms about what is right and wrong, the good and the bad, to govern our own lives and try that the people around us follow the same rules of the game. Rules like “Live and let live”! When faced with oppressive and life-endangering regimes or toxicity in the environment, it becomes our duty to spring into action – for healing and to (as far as possible) persuade malignant entities to practice justice. Rules like-There is a thin line between a human and a barbarian; let’s cross that line and please become human again,” as for now, we are on the wrong side of the line!
