At the nearby Hindu Sabha Mandir, Jasmine runs her right-hand fingers fearlessly through the gently burning middle part of an Aarthi Diya/lamp; Venkateswara, nicely placed in the temple at the feet of ornately dressed deities, just the way I do. Then, due to virtue of my Indian roots and values, I try to instantly collect a smear of Rudran/ ghee sitting in the base of the diya (oil lamp) and customarily rub it on my eyelids and head for the sake of a shower of His divine blessings, purity, goodness, good luck, power and of course enlightenment. Jasmine copies my act with just as much conviction. If a mother believes in a ritual, no matter how futile, the child follows the unabashed authenticity of the same:) She is my God gifted archetype, no matter what rituals I perform at a Mandir or how I do anything and everything else in daily life.
If a parent reveals and shares comfortably his/ her inner experiences and belief system, the child follows just as much as required, when required, without worrying about the confusing and convoluted standards of others… for such is the bond of love that ties a child together with a parent.
Faith is very visual most of the times, it quietly enters through the eyes and makes room in a soul 🙂 Faith doesn’t prove anything at all… it just nurtures and sustains. Human beings generally have at least one area of life where they have unquestionable trust. It could be something as evident as water quenching our thirst or something as obvious as earth supporting each new step that we take.
Faith is a pathless path, as much as a like value system, not measured by the yardsticks of any religion or geographical boundaries.
I wonder why then they say that immigrants leave their roots behind and move on swiftly. I don’t really agree, for I believe strongly that no matter what the circumstances, the roots of a person never part away, they tag along, rather firmly.
Roots tag along, roots are rather mystical. They are not far away. They are always available and ever so expanding. We don’t need to deserve them, neither take a pledge to be born under certain conditions/ country or prepare ourselves to enjoy the benefits of roots for they fulfill a million arbitrary conditions. Roots are here & now, and reveal themselves every time we step out of the clouds of conceptual thinking. Roots never fail us. Not even briefly. Not even momentarily.
I try to ignore when people judge and evaluate the differences between a first-generation Indian immigrant mother and her daughter, who only knows one country due to the virtue of her birth and upbringing, Canada! I pay more attention to the similarities that we both have! Embedded in and within every cell, every particle, every atom and every common factor that we both share! Glimpse after glimpse I remember to remember the roots that have secretly tagged themselves along from India to Canada! My roots are always and always one step ahead! Am I right Jasmine Mehar Kaur??? Yes, mom is almost always right dear child!
